Personality AND Looks

Friday, May 31st, 2002

Hi again.

Did you know that match.com has a picture scanning service? You can send them a print (picture) and they’ll scan it for you and apply it to your ad. I think there’s information about it when you go to the “My Photos” section on the site.

I go for personality AND looks. Desirable looks and desirable personality are both necessary ingredients for romance, in my opinion. It’s hard to say that one is any more or less important than the other, or should be for that matter.

Well, take care.

No See, No Write

Friday, May 31st, 2002

Hi.

Well, I don’t want to get too involved in writing until I know what you look like. In the past, I spent months writing to people before seeing their pictures, and then when they did produce the photos, I found I was not attracted to them. I just don’t want to waste time for either of us. So, if you get a photo, send it along and perhaps we can pick this up then.

Take care, and good luck.

Another New Acquaintance

Friday, May 31st, 2002

Hi again.

Thanks for sending the photos. You should put them in your ad. You’re really very pretty.

On the writing, I just started the business a few months ago. I’m building up a collection of work before I give up my current job, and also setting up a state-of-the-art home office while I still have my current income. The plan is to go to full-time writing sometime next year, once I have enough for four to six books written. It seems like the bulk of the time will be spent “selling” my work, rather than writing it. And it may be slow-going for a couple of years, until I can build up a following. But I’m certainly eager to try.

On “Feeling my way around,” I’m used to that. Actually, I’m pretty functional and can do most of the things my fully sighted friends can do, except drive a car. I can read, distinguish colors from far away, do light construction, dig holes and trenches, program computers, wire houses, lay concrete, enjoy candle-lit dinners, and so on. I tried wearing contacts a few times over the years but they didn’t sit on my eyes correctly and would always drift off to the sides, producing “double vision,” halos, rainbows, and other interesting but distracting effects. So, I just wear my glasses these days.

If you’d care to chat on the phone sometime, my number is 814-742-xxxx.

Take care, and perhaps we’ll talk soon.

Dear Lisa

Friday, May 31st, 2002

Lisa,

Good morning to you ! :)

Yes, I enjoyed our talk as well and would definitely welcome further talks. If you get this before you head for home, how about sending along a phone number where I can reach you this weekend? Or, give me a call yourself.

The pavilion is great. I’m putting up some fluorescent lights inside it – got one up yesterday and will complete the job of installing the other one today. Also, I purchased some metal halide flood lights to light the grounds surrounding the pavilion. They are quite bright. :)

Work is going well. Writing some JSP pages and supporting Java code for them this week. It sounds like your studies are keeping you busy and happy. That’s nice.

It would be nice to meet you sometime over the weekend, since you’re going to be in the area.

Perhaps we’ll talk over the weekend.

Have a safe trip, and I’ll talk to you soon.

[This one says that she's already talking to someone. They why I did not ask, did she still have her profile visible to all? Some lies just don't cut it. :-) ]

Good luck to you too. Take care,

Lisa’s Interested

Friday, May 24th, 2002

Dear Lisa,

Coalport ? ! ? ! Wow! That’s only about a half-hour drive from here. I’ve been through there numerous times over the years on the way to Glendale lake. And, I lived in Pittsburgh for close to 18 years. Yes, the bus system there is very good. I don’t get out there to visit as often as I would like, but Pittsburgh holds many boyhood memories and current-day friends.

Are you going to college full-time?

I’m putting my CD and record collection into Access 2000. I have the tables and indexes designed. I just need to find some time to type in all the data. Wondering if there’s a way to connect access to the cddb on the net, to download the information about each CD? Media players do it so it seems that with a bit of programming, the same could be done to Access. But I’ve got too many other things going on right now, of higher priority. Perhaps I’ll get to it when I retire.

I’ll be passing through Harrisburg on the way to Philly on Friday, June 14th. I think the train stops in Harrisburg for about 20 minutes at around 2:25 PM – approximately. If you happen to be in the area, perhaps we could meet for a quick Coke and handshake.

Lots of folks where I work are going for their Oracle DBA certification. Apparently, it’s the ticket for jumpstarting one’s IT career. Oracle DBAs are highly sought and make lots of money. Best wishes to you for success in this endeavor.

It would be great to hear about your business idea some time. Perhaps we can talk about that when we chat on the phone. And speaking of that, yes, I’d love to talk to you live. My phone number is:
814-742-xxxx.
I’ll be in and out all day tomorrow and Sunday. I’m working on putting the finishing touches on a pavilion we had built in the back yard last month, and so if you don’t get me, I’ll probably be out there. But leave a voice mail. It will page me then, and I can call you right back – if you want to share your phone number that is. Try calling me Saturday morning before noon, or after you get home at 8:00 PM. I’ll most likely be around during those times.

I depend on my Mom, sisters, and brothers in law to get me to and from the train station and airport. I’m glad my in-laws like going to Lowe’s – my favorite store. I get up there once or twice a week. It used to bother me much more – not being able to drive. But I’ve gotten pretty used to it and people here have been so helpful that I really don’t have any problems getting where I really need to go.

The bear movie was cute. Thanks for sharing it.

Well Lisa, I’m going to bed. Worked in the yard this evening for a few hours, smoothing over a trench we had dug to run electricity to the pavilion. The trenching is finished and filled in – all 210 feet of it, but I am bushed. So, signing off for now. Take care, and do call me tomorrow. I’m looking forward to it.

Someone’s Interested

Thursday, May 23rd, 2002

Good morning Lisa.

No, I don’t find your visual problems distressing at all. This might sound weird, but it’s nice to find someone in a similar situation to mine. I bet we could spend hours talking about how we cope without cars and what the social ramifications of confinement to bike and leg transportation are.

Yes, friendship sounds grand. I’m rather unsettled these days on the kind of relationship I’m looking for. Oh, when I was in my 20s, I wanted to get married and have the house in the suburbs with the white picket fence, the two cats in the yard, and the three kids playing out back. But these days, I’m not so attached to that. Not even sure I want to get married at this point. But friendships are very enjoyable. Let’s work on building one and see how it is.

Database? Wow. I work with Oracle 8i right now in my current job, along with Java, JSPs and servlets. I’m a tech lead on a project in which we’re building a test harness web site for some of our company’s infrastructure components, that will verify proper operation of the component under heavy user-simulated load, prior to installing the component into production. Interesting work, but I’ve been working with computers for about 20 years now, and I’m ready to change careers. The plan is to become a freelance writer within the next year. Anyway, feel free to pass along your DB questions. While I would not call myself a DB guru, I could most likely find you the answers you’re after.

Well, have to get to work. Have a great day, and we’ll talk more later on,

Tom Hesley

[But she declined. So I wrote back:]
