Dream Deferred, Dream Denied

Dear [Mentat],

I never heard the saying [that a dream deferred is a dream denied].

I agree that perhaps there are things I need to establish (or reestablish) before I’m ready for a serious, long-term relationship. At work, they used to talk of a similar concept, of taking time to “sharpen the ax” before proceeding with the job. Though you’re not productively cutting down trees while you’re sharpening, in the long run, you’ll cut more trees. Certainly it’s better to stop to better prepare at times. I only hope I don’t run out of life while trying to make my conditions more optimal for attracting a beautiful mate.

[Sometimes, you have to defer your dreams for a little while in order to raise your chances of making them come true later.]

I believe I sensed that you, deep down, don’t see celibacy as “the ultimate solution.” Perhaps this is why I’ve been arguing so vehemently against it; because sometimes, you seemed to treat it as optimal. But maybe that was more of how I read you more than what you actually said. Of course, now, there’s no further reason to argue this, since you and I seem to be on the same page concerning it.
