Dr. Phil’s Shows of Late
[Mentat],
Yes, the doc has had some really questionable characters on there lately, and several have “gone off” and cussed Phil out. The earlier seasons were better, but he’s probably trying to get higher ratings. And let’s face it: People love seeing others fight. While I don’t think Phil openly encourages this the way Springer does, the arguing does seem, suspiciously, to happen more this year than in seasons past. Also, he has a new feature this year (called The Dr. Phil House) where he takes several people with axes to grind (such as racists and chauvinists and profoundly troubled couples), and moves them into the house for a week or two. There are cameras and microphones all over the place and he records everything that happens. Then, he comes to calm things down when serious fighting erupts and gives his professional take on the problem. Maybe this forced contention is what Cindy doesn’t like.
On [Dr. Phil's] Love Smart book: I don’t recall it being heavily slanted toward women. Most of its advice applies to both sexes. However, Doc Phil seems to cater to the women — they attend his show in greater numbers then the men, and these days, it’s politically correct for men to give extra weight to female points of view. He seems to agree with the women in troubled relationships more than the men, but I’m not convinced that women are any more righteous over all. Perhaps he just picks scenarios to televise where the woman is the more correct party. So often the husbands are real [jerks].
